Always a part of you

Most living things are made up of one or more cells. These are more cells from our bodies and from plants.

Sperm This is a very thin section of mouse sperm as seen in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). These sperm start out looking like more ordinary cells, but then they lose some parts and gain other parts to become specialized. They lose most of their cytoplasm and about half of the contents of their nucleus. The nucleus (dark purple) fills most of the head. Behind the head is the midpiece, mostly filled with mitochondria (green) which will provide the energy for swimming. Sperm swim by whipping the tail, called the flagellum (blue).
