Always a part of you

Most living things are made up of one or more cells. These are more cells from our bodies and from plants.

Mitochondria
Mitochondria

TEM section of cell with mitochochondria.

In this image the mitochondria are green with yellow cristae (inner membranes). Mitochondria produce energy for cells by aerobic metabolism, converting the energy stored in sugar into ATP for use by the cell.

Mitochondria can divide to form two mitochondria, and the two in the middleof this picture may have originally been one. These mitochondria are a little more than half a micrometer across.
