Paramecium
Paramecium

This is a Paramecium, which is a ciliate in the kingdom Protista. It is a unicellular organism covered with tiny motile hairs. These cilia beat in a rhythm that moves them through water at a speed of up to about a millimeter per second, which is really fast for such a small cell!

Paramecium are good hunters, and stun their prey with explosive darts, called trichocysts. Then they pull the food toward their mouth, called the oral groove, which you can see better in the next picture.
